The Assessment Process Experienced Worker Assessment

Assessment is a process that helps judgements to be made about your performance. The assessment is made against a national standard and verified to match that standard. It involves the assessor and you making decisions about your progress towards your goal. For this to be achieved, your assessor will need evidence of your knowledge and understanding, and performance in the workplace.

It is your responsibility to be working in the correct environment so suitable evidence for assessment can be gathered, against each of the 6 units, in your Portfolio, to show consistency each unit must be covered on at least 2 occasions. (One job may well cover many of the units.)

To do this, you will need to plan the assessment process with your assessor. Both of you need to agree a plan for this portfolio to ensure acceptable evidence is gathered. Evidence is only valid when you are competent at that part of the job; it is not about training.

To summarise the process after a successful application; your assessment will be in the following stages.

·        Induction with your assessor, this will summarize the work required

·        Generating and collecting evidence by candidate and placing on portfolio platform

·        Assessment of evidence by your assessor

·        Assessor feedback about your evidence

·        Once portfolio completed there is a Quality Assurance process of your work

·        Certification

The requirements of your portfolio are based on the needs of the electrical contracting industry, and as such, you should be able to achieve the award by working on your normal job.

What is Evidence?
Evidence is anything that proves to your assessor that you have met the standards required in your portfolio.

Evidence must be:

• Authentic, it must be truly about you and related to genuine work.

• Sufficient, it must match the requirements of the standards.

1605 Assessment process and evidence required.

There are 7 NVQ units in this qualification, each unit is completed on 2 occasions showing different work on those occasions. The types of evidence in each unit are noted below. We do not expect to complete the units in numbered order, they can be completed as when you have the evidence required for them. Evidence is expected to be provided from real jobs on real sites and cannot be accepted from an install on your mates’ garage wall. You are expected to understand that you are being assessed to a national standard and your assessor is completing your assessment to that national standard and there is nothing personal in that decision.

You will already know that we will be completing preparation of your evidence before presenting this portfolio.

What is most important is the AM2 test, as you will know this is something which all candidates are expected to take and pass. If you have not booked the test, please be aware that many AM2 centres now run long waiting lists for candidates to take the test. This is very often as much as 3 to 4 months, so you should contact your local centre to arrange a test.

Unit 001 “Applying health and safety legislation and working practices”, you will need pictures of risk assessments and method statements that you have signed on to, along with permits, and clearing site etc. Identify hazards and select and use the appropriate PPE. You will need evidence of site inductions and how any emergency is dealt with and where the assembly point is, you should also provide evidence of the first aid procedure on your site.

Unit 002 “Applying environmental legislation, working practices and the principles of environmental technology systems”, is about you applying environmental legislation, working practices and principles for electrotechnical services. It is about using work methods and procedures to reduce material wastage and the impact of work activities on the environment. Finally, it’s about your ability to supply information on environmental technology systems in the work location. The assessment will be completed by your assessor in completing a professional discussion with you on these matters.

Unit 003 “Overseeing and organising the work environment”, You will be expected to demonstrate that you can implement practices and procedures for overseeing and organising the work environment for the installation of electrotechnical systems.

Assessment of implementing practices and procedures for overseeing and organising the work environment by an assessor will take place through “professional discussion/assignment” with the candidate in the workplace, as to how they would implement practices and procedures for overseeing and organising the work environment.

Unit 004 “Planning, preparing and installing wiring systems and associated equipment in buildings, structures and the environment”, you will be able to identify and select materials, equipment and components which are compatible with the installation specification. Identify suitable methods, procedures, and practices for the installation of electrical systems, enclosures, and associated equipment. Confirm site readiness for installation work to begin and confirm secure site storage facilities for tools, equipment, materials, and components.

As this is first fix work, you need pictures of installing 5 different types of containment. This means installing and fixing the containment. These are specifically PVC and steel conduit, PVC and steel trunking and cable tray.

You also need pictures of installing in 4 different types of cables, which are SWA, singles, twin, and FP. Finally, you are expected to provide evidence of different types of equipment such as isolators and switches, luminaires, distribution boards, socket outlets etc.

Unit 005 “Terminating and connecting conductors, cables and flexible cords in electrical systems”, this is 2nd fix work. In completing this work, you will need to show your safe isolation procedure. The evidence you need to provide are pictures of connecting 4 different types of cables for different systems, this means all the conductors of the cable stripped and connected. The cables will be SWA, PVC twin, PVC singles and multicore and FP. As an example, this could be twin into a switch and a socket, it could be singles into a fitting, FP into a sounder or call point, and SWA into an isolator.

Unit 006 “Inspecting, testing, commissioning and certifying electrotechnical systems and equipment in buildings, structures and the environment”, the evidence will be sourced from a real working environment that must be provided to illustrate that, you have demonstrated on two separate occasions you can apply the principles and follow the procedures for the inspecting, testing, commissioning and certifying of electrotechnical systems and equipment in buildings, structures and the environment in accordance with approved industry practices, statutory and non-statutory regulations and the assessment criteria for each of the learning outcomes.

This means completing a safe isolation procedure.

This means completing a visual inspection.

This means completing the test sequence for the following tests, RFC testing, CPC testing, insulation resistance, earth fault loop impedance, prospective fault current and RCD testing, we should also be able to see the test results for each test on the meter. Finally, you should provide pictures of the test sheet completed for the board tested.

Unit 007 “Diagnosing and correcting electrical faults in electrical systems and equipment in buildings, structures and the environment”, so it’s about fault finding, the evidence will be pictures of you finding and fixing a fault, this should include testing before to show the type of fault and then afterwards to show the fault is fixed. You are expected to show evidence of 3 different faults found on site.
